Here is an easy recipe to make slime, which can be stress-relieving to stretch and play with. It only requires two ingredients and is the perfect DIY project for a bit of fun! (Instructions adapted from Mom's Minivan)

1.

Pour ¼ cup of white school glue into your bowl!

2.

Add liquid laundry detergent.

It is best to do this slowly. Add 5-6 drops of detergent and then mix it. Continue adding detergent until the slime stops sticking to the bowl.

3.

After your slime is complete, knead/stretch it in your hands! The more you work with it, the stretchier and smoother it will be. Store the slime in a plastic container or zip loc bag.

Materials:

  • White school glue (Elmer’s is a great brand!) [Glitter Glue works for color!]

  • Liquid laundry detergent (Tide has worked best for me in the past!)

  • A bowl (choose one that can stand to get a bit messy)

  • A mixing utensil (i.e. a spoon or rubber spatula)

  • You can make a bigger batch; just make sure to multiply the amount of detergent accordingly!

  • You can also add food coloring to the glue before you add detergent to make some fun, bright colors.

  • Feel free to add beads, rhinestones, or loose glitter to spruce up your slime!

  • To make your slime fluffy, add shaving cream to your mixture before adding detergent (equal to the amount of glue you added).

Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Paint the bottom side of the paper plate with blue acrylic paint. Make sure to let it dry entirely before continuing. Cut out a triangle from the right side of the plate, and glue this triangle on the left side of the plate. This triangle will be the tail of the fish, and the gap on the right side will be the mouth.

Glue on a googly eye, or paint one on using white and black acrylic paint. Cut two fin shapes out of colored paper and glue one to each side of the plate.

Use different colored pieces of construction paper, and trace 1- 1½ inch round circles. For ease, you can trace an object you have, such as a small round lid. Ultimately, you will use 22-25 of these circles. Cut out the circles, and fold each one in half.

(OPTIONAL) Add glue to one side, and sprinkle with glitter

Glue the fish scales in rows starting in the middle of the plate. Face the folded side to the mouth opening. Overlap the scales slightly, and place 4-5 in each row. At the end, there should be 6 rows, with the last row only having 2 scales. Let the glue dry and now, you have a pretty fish!

TIPS:

  • You can make the fish any color you want (instead of just blue)!

  • You can also spruce up the scales by adding beads, gems, or rhinestones!

  • If you do not have access to paint, use a colored paper plate and skip the painting step entirely.

  • Parents, you can help your kids out by cutting the circles out for them!

COOTIE CATCHER

Making a fortune teller is really fun, and you can use it to predict fortunes and answers! Instructions adapted from Mom's Minivan

Materials:

1) A sheet of paper

2) A pair of scissors

3) Markers to decorate and add fortunes!

 1) Cut a standard piece of paper into a square.

 2) Unfold the paper.

 3) Fold the other corner and crease it. Unfold the paper once again, so that it is a square again.

 4) Fold each corner of paper into the center.

 5) This is how it should look!

 6) Flip the square over (to the unfolded side).

 7) Repeat step 4 on this side.

 8) Check to make sure it looks like this!

 9) Lift the flap and write your fortunes!

 10) Write numbers on each of the triangles (make sure they are different!)

 11) Flip the cootie catcher over and either write the name of a color or color each flap a different color.

12) Crease it along the flap lines, and then flip it back over. Stick your two thumbs and forefingers into each of the four pockets. When you bring your fingers together, all 4 flaps should meet in the middle!

TIPS:

  • You can either make a cootie catcher with fortunes, where the person will get a fortune at the end, or one with yes or no answers. In this version, the person playing has to ask a yes or no question and will get his/her response from the cootie catcher. Here are some fortune ideas:

    • You have a secret admirer.

    • You will have great wealth.

    • You will travel somewhere new.

    • You will do a good deed today.

    • You will make a new friend soon.

    • You will make straight A's on your report card.

    • You will forget something important!

    • You will receive a nice surprise soon.

  • If you are doing the yes/no variation, here are some suggestions:

    • Yes

    • No

    • Maybe

    • Certainly

    • Definitely Not
